About Us

The Quilted Bean is located on the plains of north central North Dakota in the small community of Velva,. You'll find Velva a very friendly town nestled in the stately oak trees along the Souris River Valley. If you live nearby, I invite you to gather your friends or special group for a road trip and come to my shop for lunch or just a latte and then stay and browse around the quilt shop.  Tour buses welcome!

My family and I have done extensive remodeling on this 100-year-old building. I am sure you will find this a very unique quilt and gourmet coffee shop with its restored wood flooring, 14 foot tin ceiling, a loft to retreat to, plus the private meeting room /classroom featuring my grandparents wedding photos..."The Bratterud Room ".

The shop opens weekdays at 8 a.m. (sometimes 7 a.m.) and serves iron-grilled sandwiches, soups, salads, fresh-baked bread and a full espresso bar throughout the day until closing at 5:30 p.m. We recently started a new venture...Ole and Lena Take N' Bake Pizza and stay open until later  Thursday and Friday evenings so our customers can pick up their "oven-ready" pizza on their way home from work.  The shop also is open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays and is open evenings when quilting classes are held.

The Quilted Bean is a dream come true for me. I could never have achieved my dream without the help of my children. My sons Brent and David worked on building renovations nearly every evening from Thanksgiving time until we opened in March 2008...after putting in a full day of work and weekends. My daughter Heather, mother-in-law Verna and multiple friends contributed multiple hours to the renovations also. I owe a debt of gratitude to all of them. It has turned into a beautiful building.

We offer a wide variety of high quality quilting fabric and notions, plus classes. Please see my newsletter for a listing of upcoming classes.

I invite you to come in and see us anytime. If you don’t live here, I would love to hear from you via e-mail.
